Ancestry DNA’s New Television Series ‘A New Leaf’ Featured on NBC
A New Leaf, a new show on NBC, will highlight the value of understanding one’s family history. In partnership with Ancestry DNA, Daisy Fuentes hosted this show to join families to learn the importance of understanding their family history to make important life decisions. Each week “A New Leaf” will follow people who are learning about their genealogy and family history via Ancestry DNA. Ancestry DNA will also go on a self-discovery journey and try to learn from the past by looking at the future.
Jennifer Utley,
Director of Research at Ancestry, has a conversation. Let’s dive into the
questions and answers.
How does Ancestry’s A New Leaf and other shows are similar?
Ancestry’s role or
work goes far beyond a sponsor for many television shows. Ancestry’s
researchers and genealogists have invested thousands of hours researching
individuals for all programs, including a new leaf. Ancestry has around 100
genealogists on staff, and these build family trees after examining those
family trees to source authentic stories that you can share on television with
our viewers.
What does our research process look like to create a single
episode of A New Leaf?
We research every new
family tree the same way and start with the cast member, episode subject, and
person who already knows about their family. We told our entire cast member to
make a family tree, and their details help us start quickly. Then, the team
pulls our extensive research portion and tries our best to build a 5-generation
family tree. Our Ancestry team must start to notice potential family stories
that can be incorporated in a future episode. Ancestry’s strategy is typically
based on finding a single character or probably focuses on one side of the
family. We should go deep in finding their records and trying to learn the
historical context around their lives to tell a more emotional story.
Along with detailed research, what you do behind the scene to
make an episode of A New Leaf come to life?
Family history
research is the only thing to create a great television show. We consult with
the best local experts and historians and find out some interesting places to
capture, and we do our best to make relevant historical pictures that we can
make live on our show. Television is a great visual medium, so we provide our
audience with compelling visuals and historical images.
Family History research is the keystone of A New Leaf. Do you
think Genealogy and Family History research are becoming more popular? Why or
why not?
Family history is
popular for people of all ages. The advent of the internet is a game-changer
for all people’s ages. Ancestry has added all the historical records online and
makes it hard to find documents searchable by clicking on the button. Ancestry
has been at the forefront of family history research, adding new content to our
historical record or developing innovative research for more than three
decades. All these will help or enable people to uncover their family stories.
What lessons can someone learn by understanding their family’s
journey?
Over the years, the
family history positively affected so many lives, and these are countless
stories that anyone can learn from someone’s family tree. Emory University
researchers found that children and teenagers who understand their family
history stories well, and the adversity and trials their ancestors faced, are
more flexible and less anxious in their lives today. The concept behind this is
that teenagers and children think that if their ancestors or someone in their
family had faced or overcame a situation, they could also.
What excites the viewers to learn more as they watch the show A
New Leaf?
We had invested
countless hours into bringing meaningful stories to viewers, and I was always
excited when the show A New Leaf premieres because we have that opportunity to
share family stories worldwide. Every day, fans of the show ask to feature more
family stories, and the viewers will love the show and inspire a new generation
of future family historians.
