Check Out The New Ancestry DNA Irish Connection

Recently my friend Harry asked me to look at his Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate, as he was confused by the results. He was confused that he had a fair amount of Irish in the results estimates, but he wasn’t aware of any Irish ancestors. I asked him about his Scottish Ancestry, and his mother is from Edinburgh.

But in Harry’s case, I guessed that 37% Irish could be in part to his Scottish ancestors. Most people determine that their estimate does not seem to mirror what they know about their ancestors on paper. People usually ask how it is possible to have Irish Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate if they do not have any Irish in their family tree.

Look at the map. You will find that although the Irish Ethnicity estimate primarily represents Ancestry from Ireland and covers many adjacent parts or locations of the world, like England, Scotland, Wales, and North-West Europe. There can be the reason that people in this region of the world have moved and settled around over the past hundred years and have taken their DNA with them.



There can be signs that even people with profound roots in a given area still have a mark of Irish Ancestry In their DNA Ethnicity Estimate, especially if that area is close to Ireland. People across the United Kingdom and Ireland can have an Irish Ancestry Estimate.

Look at the chart, the Irish Ancestry estimates for mine, and a few friends with diverse backgrounds. I have a 93% Irish Ancestry Estimate that is usual for a native Irish person. Along with mine, Dan, Sue, and Harry, who is also British, Dan is Welsh with 50% Estimates. Sue is English, having a Scottish Dad and an Irish Mom, and her Estimates are 61%.

Harry is English with 37% Estimates, and his mom is Scottish. Scott has an Irish Estimates of 28% and is an American, but he has Scottish Ancestry. JP is a French guy who has 24% Irish Ancestry Estimates. As you can see, as you move away from Ireland, your Irish Ethnicity Estimates will decrease. Looking at the results, there are two questions to consider.

Why is this area called Ireland and not, for example, Celtic?

If I have an Irish Estimate, will it reflect heritage from the Island of Ireland or something else?

If we take the first question, why is the region called Ireland? There are many reasons for this. The simplest explanation is the reference panel that is used to identify your estimates. The Ancestry DNA Reference Panel is the set of DNA samples representing individuals from particular areas worldwide, and your DNA is compared to obtain your DNA Ethnicity Estimate.

The people used in the DNA Reference Panel have profound roots in Ireland if you go back several generations. You also need to understand the Reference Panel to answer the second question. Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate tells that you share Genetic Ancestry with a group of people who aimed to represent individuals from a particular place of the world.

The shared Genetic Ancestry may be thousands of years ago. But, in the Ireland case, the DNA Ethnicity Estimate clearly says to you that you share Genetic Ancestry with modern people of Ireland who have profound roots in Ireland as authenticated by pedigrees if you go back many generations.

However, we know that even these have profound roots, the neighboring places of Ireland have strong genetic, historical connections to Ireland too. It is obvious that these connections will mirror in the DNA of people who belong to those areas and in their DNA Ethnicity Estimates. Should you understand your Irish Estimate?

You should approach this question like other family history questions and search for supporting evidence. Do you have historical evidence pointing to Scottish or Irish Ancestry? If yes, Ethnicity Estimate supports the documentation or if your surname is Jones or Fraser, typically Welsh and Scottish surnames. It can be an indicator for your Welsh and Scottish source for your Irish Estimate.

You are only looking for evidence from multiple sources telling the same story. If you do not have supporting proof, there can be many explanations for your Irish Estimate. The Irish Ancestry may be above the reach of your paper mark. It can also be possible that your Irish Ethnicity Estimate can portray Ancestry from Wales and Scotland, anywhere in the United Kingdom, or other places. It is not just answering the question but the starting of a more profound understanding examination of your story.
